Jetset Jingles :: California Dreamin'

California Dreamin, a music playlist[trip style = sun]

Jetset Jingles publishes once monthly. The ‘soundtrack’ is written, mixed and mastered by Nicole, amateur DJ by night and movie maven by day.

“C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-eye-ah…….knows how to party” - 2Pac

If you were in high school in the mid to late '90s, those lyrics should instantly put you back to 1996---likely at a school dance or cruising the streets in your parent's car---when 2Pac released his ‘California Love’ single. And he’s not the only artist to have sung about the Golden State, he’s among hundreds who have crooned about heading out West to find the sun, the beach and the ladies.

There’s something to be said about the California-cool laid-back vibe and the year-round sunshine, which is why I head South a few times a year to catch some R&R. My upcoming trip is going to be music- and sun-themed---obviously!---taking in the tunes at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival {which I wrote about two years ago}.

This month's Jetset Jingles plays homage to the artists who all have one thing in common: sunshine on the mind, and will have you California dreamin’ in no time…

Happy Listening.

Jetset Jingles :: Après-Ski

apres-ski music[trip style = ski]

Along with the good fortune of living in the nature-y city that I do {Vancouver BC}, comes the privilege of being surrounded by ski hills. Minutes from the city you’ll find three local mountains {Cypress, Seymour and Grouse}, and an hour and half drive away there are two of the best slopes in North America, Whistler and Blackcomb.

I’ve been skiing for as long as I can remember, and one of my favorite things about a ski day is the infamous après-ski, or simply, après to enthusiasts. Gathering with friends on a patio, eating nachos and throwing back a cold beer is almost as good as shredding on the slopes!

But there’s a second kind of après, one that I like to call the après-après-ski. It takes place once you get back to your cabin. You peel off your bulky layers of cold-weather clothes, pour yourself a glass of Cabernet and relax on a bearskin rug, fireside of course. Ok, so this may seem like a scene out of a cheesy romance novel, but I think you get the picture, the goal of the après-après-ski is to relax and unwind after your long day navigating the mountain. And with this in mind, I’ve created the ultimate playlist for your next après-après-ski.

Happy listening….

Song List 1/ Champion Sound - Star of Love 2/ I Follow Rivers - Wounded Rhymes (Deluxe Version) 3/ High And Dry - Pointless Nostalgic 4/ Fiction - Coexist

Jetset Jingles :: Global Holiday Classics

[trip style = any]

It’s the end of November, which can only mean ONE thing; "Mele Kalikimaka" {Merry Christmas in ancient Hawaiian} is right around the corner. I LOVE this time of year marked by holiday parties, filling food, festive lights and time-honored traditions.

One of my seasonal traditions has me flying South for the holidays. Yes that’s right. Like last year, I’ll be celebrating Christmas with the fam in sunny Palm Springs. Then, in hopes of creating a new tradition, I’ll be heading to Maui's sugary shores to ring in the New Year with friends.

No matter what your holiday traditions may be, or what part of the world you celebrate them in, this month's playlist is a collection of familiar holiday songs from around the globe. Perfect for any holiday globetrotter.

'Tis the Season, happy listening…

Song List 1. Feliz Navidad - The 20 Greatest Christmas Songs 2. Mele Kalikimaka (Single) - A Merry Christmas with Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters (Remastered) 3. O Tannenbaum - The Christmas Song 4. Joyeux Noël - Joyeux Noël 5. All I Want for Christmas Is You (Original Version) - Merry Christmas

Jetset Jingles :: It's Bittersweet

[trip style = any]

Even though Summer doesn’t technically wrap until September 21st, for most people, Labor Day weekend marks the end {but if you want to keep it going, read our recently published 8 Ways To Extend Summer}! After long days snacking on freezies and ranch-flavored chips in front of some body of water, come Sept 4th we suddenly change routines, and both kids and adults return to their version of nine-to-five.

That’s why last weekend I decided to take an end-of-summer getaway, one last hurrah if you will, to Palm Springs, California. The weather was HOT {and I’m talking fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk-hot}, the mood was relaxed {thanks to my playlist}, and the time was savored {drinking Pina Coladas and reading a mindless John Grisham novel - Litigators}.

This month I’ve put together an end-of-summer playlist. A bittersweet mix of songs to remind you of fun summer days past and songs to get you prepped for fall days to come...

Happy listening.

Song List 1/ Wild Ones (feat. Sia) - Wild Ones (feat. Sia) - Single 2/ I Want You Back - Jackson 5: The Ultimate Collection 3/ Dog Days Are Over - Lungs 4/ In the Air (feat. Angela McCluskey) - In the Air (feat. Angela McCluskey) - Single 5/ Blue Jeans (RAC Mix) - Blue Jeans (Remixes) - EP

Jetset Jingles :: TS Music Musts

[trip style = any]

Jetset Jingles publishes once monthly. The ‘soundtrack’ is written, mixed and mastered by Nicole, amateur DJ by night and movie maven by day.

Like picking a trip style, music selection is a very personal and current-state-of-mind process. This month’s travel playlist is no exception to that rule. I asked the TS ladies to give me a couple of their travel music musts---songs that either get them excited for their upcoming travels or keep them going while transiting to their destination.

It’s a fun, eclectic mix! Here’s what they had to say about some of their selections:

Lauren {travel beauty} St Germain, So Flute Mariah Carey, Dreamlover “It brings back memories of listening to it on planes and while packing to get me excited to go away”

Heather {fashion friday} Brooke Fraser, Something In the Water Bill Withers, Lovely Day “Because everyone knows the words”

Keryn {kinderhop} Sarah McLaughlin, Ice Cream Paul Simon, Graceland “Because they have good beats that keep us motivated and moving down the road, even if it’s a very boring drive”

Leah {healthy on the road} Coldplay, Paradise M83, Intro “The arrangement is so inspiring when heading out on the road or on a run”

Trish {editor} Tom Petty, Free Falling Coldplay, Viva La Vida "It makes me want to dance on a beach until all hours of the morning, or until the bugs come out" {Nicole's Note: I secretly think this is Trish’s favorite song, like, ever. Whenever I ask her for a good tune for a travel playlist, she always suggests Viva La Vida}

Happy listening.

Song List 1/ Viva la Vida - Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends 2/ Dreamlover - Mariah Carey: Greatest Hits 3/ Something In the Water - Flags (Deluxe Version) 4/ Lovely Day - Bill Withers' Greatest Hits 5/ Graceland - The Essential Paul Simon 6/ Free Fallin' - Full Moon Fever 7/ Paradise - Mylo Xyloto 8/ Intro - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming 9/ Ice Cream - Closer - The Best of Sarah McLachlan (Deluxe Version)
