Travel Apps :: Photoshop Mobile

photoshop express for iphoneEdit photos on the go with Adobe's Photoshop Express. Although the first version of this app wasn't stellar (and some photo fanatics opted for CameraBag instead) the newest iteration has made significant improvements! Whether you take a pic within the app or select an image from your photo library, having the ability to edit photos on-demand is invaluable in our digitally obsessed (myself included) day and age. This app is significant because people are starting to leave their cameras at home---I know I do. With the iPhone 3GS' decent camera, and the iPhone 4's camera improvements (5mp, flash, record at 720pHD, front-facing camera), unless you're going on serious trip, using the iPhone's point-and-shoot for weekend or short-haul trips is usually sufficient.

Once you're done editing, upload the photo to your blog, facebook, twitter or email, or use it later and store it on your free online account.  Love it!

Travel Trappings :: Camping

awesome camping gear[trip style = camping]

I have friends who are serious and talented campers, and I'm not sure how this is possible, but even their dog is good at camping! They make camping into a five-star eco experience with fresh-caught gourmet meals, custom-made camping accouterments and a reno'd camper.  All in all, they make it look easy. But for those of us who aren't as handy in the wilderness, here are a few over-the-top, yet fabulous camping aids to bring your next call of the wild experince from 1 to 3-stars without having to give up and go the nearest motel!

Travel Trappings for Camping Coleman Blender Smoothie at sunrise anyone? Margaritas at midnight? Who knew that you could turn a night at the campsite into Margaritaville? This rechargeable and portable blender makes 48 ounces of your favourite frozen concoctions in approx 30 seconds. Your site will be the talk of the town.  Just don't forget the tequila, but that may cause you to forget quiet hours.  Find it for $65usd.

Inflate-a-Potty I'm not gonna lie, I really want this. It would make camping so much better! This inflatable, adult-size potty is a lifesaver in so many ways, but namely when you don't want to deliriously get up in the middle of the night, stumble over tent poles and pee on yourself (by accident). Using the inflatable commode in your tent is so much better than stumbling to the campsite washroom at 2am! What's even better is the description on the website: "take the clean, safe potty anywhere, fit it into your pocket, tote bag, backpack, purse, glove or boat compartment, etc..." It would be too easy to comment on this statement. Find it for $22usd.

Camp Chef Camping Outdoor Oven This 'little gem' is for when you're camping, but don't really want to be, so you bring everything but the kitchen sink. Owners of this 3,500 BTU, propane-powered oven, would say campfires are for sissies as they prepare their chocolate soufflés. In addition, it sports two 5,300 BTU matchless igniter range burners for boiling...whatever you boil in the wild. Find it for $175usd.

Enjoy the long weekend---whether you're staying in town or hittin' the road! Safe Travels.

Healthy on the Road :: Run Time

running while away tipsOne of the easiest and time-efficient ways to stay fit while traveling is to jog. In safe destinations, I love to run around the area surrounding my city hotel, or jog along the beach at my resort. In not-so-safe areas, I opt for the hotel's treadmill. Although I like the peacefulness of running by myself, running with a group is much more motivating, and until now, that's been hard to achieve while on the road.

A Run Concierge? Westin Hotels offers a running program aimed at helping guests keep up with their fitness routines while enjoying the fresh air and views of the city. Led by a running concierge (how cool is that?), and taking place three times a week, the three-mile runs welcome runners of all levels. What a great way to stay in shape and see the surrounding area! The only drawback? Running Concierges' aren't at all Westin Hotels, yet; they mostly occupy Westin's Asia Pacific hotels and three properties in Dallas. But if want to venture out on your own, many Westin Hotels also have three- and five-mile running/walking routes designed and certified by Runner's World Magazine.

Alternatives to Running Walking As obvious as this might seem, walking the same routes mentioned above or on the hotel gym's treadmill is a good way to keep active while on a business or I'm-going-to-be-sitting-a-lot type of vacation. One nice surprise when I got back from a month in Europe and Africa last year: because I'd walked so much while sightseeing, I wasn't completely out of running shape when I returned home!

Water running If your hotel doesn't have a gym, but has a pool, try water running instead. Water running wwwhhhaaattt? Rather than doing the typical egg-beater treading-water motion, replace this with the running motion with full arm and leg swings to propel you up and forward. Although the water's resistance doesn't allow you to move quickly and it's fairly tiring at first, do it in small bursts keeping your chin above water. I've done this a lot on vacation when I haven't felt like treadmill-ing or there isn't a gym! It's a great alternative to pounding the pavement!

Go Long...

It's Wednesday. You've been busy and haven't planned anything for the Labour Day Long Weekend because you: a) haven't had time b) couldn't be bothered c) think it's too expensive to go anywhere. It just so happens I can help you with all three excuses, unless you want to stay home! Here are some high/low long weekend getaways designed to get you outta town!

Long Weekend Getaways Pitch A Tent [trip style = camping] Keener campers have already reserved their campsites for the long weekend, BUT, one of my fave Vancouver Island locations, Rathtrevor Beach, still has sites available. This gorgeous beach is just below an incredible Spa (The Grotto at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort) if you want to take time away from your Coleman Cooker to relax in their large mineral pool, stand under their cold-plunge waterfall or soothe your muscles in the hot tub! PS - If you go camping, check out our 6 hand-picked free camping apps

Shop 'Till You Drop [trip style = urban] The Westin Bellevue is offering a special package for lovers of the mall and back to school shopping. Check into the hotel this friday or saturday night and get a $100 Bellevue Collection gift certificate per night and complimentary parking. Wowza!

Let Kayak Decide [trip style = spontaneous] I did a post on Kayak Explore a few months ago, and can't think of a better service to help you decide where to go for the long weekend! Just enter a few details like budget and when you want to go, and the map-based service will show you where you can fly, and for how much!

Circle Of Life [trip style = eco] Who knew a little beach community on Vancouver Island would have hanging spheres as an off-beat accommodation? It doesn't get more West Coast than this: three wood and fiberglass orbs suspended by ropes from rainforest evergreens. When it's time to descend into reality, heated washrooms and showers, a kitchenette and a small sauna await you.

Glamp It Up! [trip style = glamping] If money is no object, experience the great outdoors in style at the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. All inclusive 3-night packages from $4,750.00 CAD include return airfare from Vancouver to the Resort, deluxe accommodation, all meals, snacks and beverages {including alcohol}, massage treatments and guided activities including fishing. PS - don't let the canvas tent-facade fool you, this remote resort has not deterred this famous couple from making the trek deep into BC's gorgeous landscape!

Planning Ahead [trip style = wine tasting] If you can't get away this weekend, why not plan ahead? Here's the perfect night away: a Harry Connick Jr. Concert at a Seattle winery! Does it get any better than this? Although the concert's on a thursday night {sept 26}, maybe you could make that your 'long' weekend?

And if you want even MORE options, check out these getaways for everyone from lux lovers to campers!
