Overnight {Without The Baggage}

[trip style = quick weekend getaway]

Baggage weighs us down {in more ways than one}.

Lately I've been doing a lot of overnight-cations, a travel dance {of sorts} where two days tango with one night. Last week alone, I took two separate overnight getaways with only the clothes on my back. In other words, I didn't pack {except for any toiletries and undergarments that could fit in my purse or pocket}. In lieu of a multi-option travel wardrobe, I layered, downsizing my overnight duffel for a my purse.

Trip Styler Tip: maximize your trip style = weekend getaway {and your dollars} leaving early Saturday morning and returning later on Sunday night. Cutting out a hotel on Friday night means you just saved $150+.

I realize the no-pack overnight-cation sounds crazy. First we told you how to pack 50+ items in one carry-on, and now this? The self-imposed 'efficiency' challenge sounded a little nutso to me too, but once I tried it on for size, I realized it wasn't a challenge at all. Layering right meant I could go from day-to-night without the fuss of packing or lugging a bag!

In part, I drew inspiration from my artsy Grandma {aka, "Gram"} who used to pick outfits in two-day blocks. Once I asked her why she wore the same thing two days in a row, to which she responded "if I'm going to take the time to craft a great outfit, why wouldn't I wear it twice?" Sound advice from a well-traveled woman.

Making It Work :: Overnighting Sans Baggage:
1/ Choose your trip style, check the weather, and plan your outfit accordingly.
2/ Pick shoes and bottoms {pants, a skirt or a dress} that can go from day-to-night with ease.
3/ Layer your top half to 'reveal' a whole new look at night.
4/ Think of your clothes as the canvas and your accessories as the color.
5/ Want to bring a bathing suit too? No worries, throw it in your purse with some flip flops.

*When I was away, the weather hovered between a breezy 15 - 22 Celsius, so I chose a midi skirt and cashmere-blend sweater for day, accented by a scarf to combat the early morning and late night chill. In the eve, I ditched my sweater for a tank top, adding a belt and a necklace to switch the look.

Trip Styler Tip :: Believe it or not, as we move into fall, the no-packing weekend becomes MORE and MORE possible with the layering-potential cool weather affords.

Healthy On The Road :: 54321

[trip style = any]

When she’s not training clients or being trained by her dog Zuzu, Leah writes Healthy On The Road, published the first Wednesday of every month.

At HOTR, we often rave about the beauty of a travel-friendly circuit routine. The sky's the limit in terms of what this can involve, but since nobody wants to travel with 10 pound weights in their suitcase, most travelers seem to prefer heart-pumping, equipment-free varieties. After all, your body weight is an extremely effective strength training tool.

The internet is full of travel workout ideas, but let’s be honest, the options can be overwhelming, akin to shopping in a mega mall {no thanks}. Thanks to the wonders of Pinterest {follow tripstyler here}, we've come across a short and sweet, high-impact routine lasting ONLY 15 minutes {above}, which be done in your hotel gym, or the privacy of your room.

We give the 5-4-3-2-1 Workout a muscle-toning Healthy On The Road thumbs-up! Find the printable version via fitfabcities website here.

Fashion Friday :: Runway Style

[trip style = any]

Fashion Friday posts are published on the last Friday of every month by fashion blogger Heather.

September is huge in the fashion world with the Spring 2013 runway shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris. But honestly, how am I supposed to keep up with next season's trends when I'm still trying to make a dent in my 916-page September Vogue? It's much easier to focus on what's hot on the other runway for Fall 2012 travel style.

Jetset Jingles :: It's Bittersweet

[trip style = any]

Jetset Jingles publishes once monthly. The ‘soundtrack’ is written, mixed and mastered by Nicole, amateur DJ by night and movie maven by day.

Even though Summer doesn’t technically wrap until September 21st, for most people, Labor Day weekend marks the end {but if you want to keep it going, read our recently published 8 Ways To Extend Summer}! After long days snacking on freezies and ranch-flavored chips in front of some body of water, come Sept 4th we suddenly change routines, and both kids and adults return to their version of nine-to-five.

That’s why last weekend I decided to take an end-of-summer getaway, one last hurrah if you will, to Palm Springs, California. The weather was HOT {and I’m talking fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk-hot}, the mood was relaxed {thanks to my playlist}, and the time was savored {drinking Pina Coladas and reading a mindless John Grisham novel - Litigators}.

This month I’ve put together an end-of-summer playlist. A bittersweet mix of songs to remind you of fun summer days past and songs to get you prepped for fall days to come...

Happy listening.

Song List 1/ Wild Ones (feat. Sia) - Wild Ones (feat. Sia) - Single 2/ I Want You Back - Jackson 5: The Ultimate Collection 3/ Dog Days Are Over - Lungs 4/ In the Air (feat. Angela McCluskey) - In the Air (feat. Angela McCluskey) - Single 5/ Blue Jeans (RAC Mix) - Blue Jeans (Remixes) - EP

Travel App :: Send A Postcard

[trip style = any]

When I was little, buying 10 postcards was much more fun than waiting for my shoddy photos to develop at the camera store. Once home, I'd stick them in my scrapbook along with leaves, museum ticket stubs, candy wrappers {read: the candy on the trip was as important as the trip itself} and other mementos from the trip. I bought my last postcard in Paris ten years ago {and consequently made my last scrapbook} when I conquered the Arrondissements and Tour Eiffel solo.

Now, there's an app for that.

Sending A Digital Postcard I used the Postino iPhone App {free, and available on other smartphone platforms too} to create and pen the above postcard about my recent trip to Montreal. After a two-min process of selecting the photo from my iPhone's photo library and writing the text, I entered an email address and hit send. In a few minutes, mommy and daddy dearest had a postcard from their gallivanting gal waiting in their inbox. Sure, most of us just email or iMessage vacation photos from our photo gallery, but I like the idea of sending something a little more stylized and formal. >If you want a postcard app that's a bit more sleek and customizable than the above example, try fCards {$0.99}.

Turning A Digital Photo Into A Physical Postcard If your Grandpa isn't email savvy and still wants the 411 on your trip, no problemo, both above-mentioned apps can also convert your digital postcard into a physical postcard, and send it via mail {for a small S&H fee}.
