Fashion Friday :: Oh Mr. Sun

{Fashion Friday posts are published on the last Friday of every month by fashion blogger Heather.}

Did you hear the news? After 10 seasons, CSI Miami has been cancelled. Which means no more Horatio Caine famously taking off his sunglasses and delivering crime-fighting one-liners. This post isn't about CSI or Miami, but it is about sunglasses---the accessory/travel necessity where fashion truly meets function.

The aviator will always be in style, and so will the classic wayfarer, which made a huge comeback in the past few years and remains the highest-selling style in history. But sunglasses are also about trends, such as the oversized face-covering Olsen twins-style shades that once graced the face of every girl you know. More recently, the style du jour---for men and women---has shifted to round, flat top and cat eye shapes, as well as a wider color palette beyond black and tortoise.

Trip Styler tip: Whip out your zinc! The recent popularity of neon 90s neoprene zip-up swimsuits has signaled the comeback of the sunglasses cord!

Now What To Buy?
Men (clockwise from far left) Quay Eyewear flatbrow sunglasses, Retrosuperfuture wayfarer sunglasses, None the Wiser round sunglasses, Marc By Marc Jacobs aviator sunglasses, Warby Parker griffin sunglasses, Le Specs digital nomad round sunglasses

Women (clockwise from far right) Asos keyhole sunglasses, Asos metal top keyhole round sunglasses, Asos metal half frame cat eye sunglasses, Asos flat top round sunglasses, Asos mix frame cat eye sunglasses, Xhilaration round blue sunglasses, Xhilaration pink wayfarer sunglasses, Warby Parker x Suno wendel sunglasses, Asos rose gold aviator sunglasses, Karen Walker harvest sunglasses

Fashion Friday :: Spring in San Francisco

Fashion Friday posts are published on the last Friday of every month by fashion blogger Heather

It's easy to leave your heart in San Francisco, as the saying goes, but with such amazing shopping, it's even easier to leave your chequing account. Having just returned from the City by the Bay, I couldn't wait to share a few of my favorite shopping and eating haunts {since you can't have one without the other}. Don't forget your walking shoes!

San Francisco mini neighborhood shopping guide

The Mission

I have a mad crush on the Mission, which has some of the best shops and restaurants in the city---not to mention the coolest park and the prettiest boys and girls on bicycles you ever did see. It's a neighborhood gentri-hipsterfied with coffee shops, thrift stores, juice bars and high-end furniture galleries. Shop around Valencia St at hippie-artisan boutique Gravel & Gold, taxidermy garden shop Paxton Gate and must-stop lifestyle store Voyager. Do yourself a favor and eat at any of the following: Delfina, Foreign Cinema, Four Barrel Coffee, Tartine, Bar Bambino and Bi-Rite Creamery.

Hayes Valley

Hayes Valley is a bit of a locals' secret just a hop-skip from the Mission and home to boutiques and delicious eats aplenty. Shop your face off at Steven Alan, Gimme Shoes, Flight 001, Welcome Stranger, Birch and Rand+Statler, and then eat/drink your face off at Biergarten, Smitten Ice Cream and Bar Jules.

Union Square

We can't discuss shopping in San Francisco without mentioning the epicentre of west coast shopping herself: Union Square. This department store heaven, which includes Macy's, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Barneys, Saks and Neiman Marcus, is also home to all of your favourite chains like Madewell, J.Crew, Zara, Diesel, H&M and Levi's. Refuel at Blue Bottle with delicious coffee and waffles before you, ahem, window shop at the likes of Kate Spade, Chanel, John Varvatos, Prada and YSL.

Jetset Jingles :: Camping

a camping music playlist[trip style = camping]

Summer just came a knocking at my door, and that means warm weather, long days, and my favorite kind of quick summer getaway: camping. There’s nothing like rounding up a group of friends or the fam, packing up the car and hitting the road to find the perfect campsite.

Along with a tent, a Coleman stove and bug spray, you can't go camping without music. Nothing beats sitting around the campfire relaxing to someone strumming your favorite lazy-day tunes on a guitar. But if you’re anything like me and can’t actually play the guitar, I’ve created the ultimate camping playlist for you to take with you on your next venture into the great outdoors.

I can almost smell the marshmallows roasting... Happy Listening.

Song List 1. Beautiful Day - All That You Can't Leave Behind 2. Soak Up the Sun - The Very Best of Sheryl Crow (Digital Version) 3. Sweet Home Alabama - The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd 4. Something Like That - A Place In the Sun 5. Fishin' In the Dark - More Great Dirt: The Best of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Vol. 2 6. Jetset Jingles :: Australia

australia music {Editor's Note: I just got back from Australia and can't wait to share pics, trip styles and tips every Friday this month. To kick things off, May's Jetset Jingles features tunes from a few familiar artists, all hailing from Oz.}

Australia: known for its Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Harbour, Kangaroos and Koalas, Crocodile Dundee and home to AC/DC, Kylie Minogue, Keith Urban, INXS, Empire of the Sun and other musical talents. Hits like “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (Crowded House), “New Sensation” (INXS), “Highway to Hell” (AC/DC) and the classic 80’s pop-aerobic “Physical” (Olivia Newton John) all blasted their way up and out from the land Down Under and became worldwide hits. And who can forget Men at Work’s “Down Under”? It’s such an iconic Oz tune that we could almost call it Australia’s unofficial theme song. Today, Australian artists such as Jessica Mauboy, Birds Of Tokyo, Jebidiah, The Potbelleez, Angus & Julia Stone and The Temper Trap are hitting the Australian Charts as well as carrying on the tradition of iconic Aussi sound all over the globe.

If you can’t escape to Oz right away, why not pretend? Head down to your nearest beach, toss some shrimp on the barbie, throw a boomerang (don’t forget to duck…) and blast the Aussi playlist I created below. With a mix of classic Oz hits and current singles, you’ll feel like you’ve just taken you’re very own getaway. Happy Listening.

1. Down Under - The Best of Men at Work: Contraband 2. Disappear - The Best of INXS 3. Something So Strong - null 4. Get Outta My Way - Aphrodite (Deluxe Experience Edition) 5. Somebody Like You - null 6. Hello (Radio Edit) - Hello - Single 7. Standing On the Shore - Walking On a Dream 8. Love Lost - Conditions 9. Contact High - Moment Bends 10. Plans - Birds Of Tokyo 11. Big Jet Plane - Down the Way

Travel Apps :: Google Translate

google translate app—Get more travel tips & updates like this by subscribing to RSS or email. —

Just released last week, the Google Translate app dazzles. Seriously, I can't stop playing with it and trying to stump it with strange translations. Using the app for the first time, the possibilities are endless for travel usefulness and crossing language barriers.

What makes it awesome: a) the laser speed by which it translates b) the amount of languages it supports (57) c) it's free d) the audio function * translate by speaking the text instead of typing it (15 languages) * listen to your translations spoken aloud (23 languages) e) the full screen mode, making the translation easy to show others f) offline support: star your favorite translations for quick access when you're not connected to wifi

How it Works After setting your translate from and to languages, write {or paste} text or speak into your iPhone for a split-second translation. Per the above point, this app does rely on the internet, so if you're offline, I highly suggest saving some phrases you'll regularly use so you can access them in a pinch!

Details

  • Works with iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad
  • For other mobile platforms, use the google mobile app {which contains a translate function}
